Meditations on Its Luminous Significance.
What follows concerning the illumination of the meaning of the name Muhammad is a personal contemplative reading, approached through symbolism and esoteric indication. Before Allah, we renew our declaration of disavowal from any utterance made without knowledge.
We conclude this year with this axis devoted to the noble name of Muhammad, peace be upon him, raising our hands in supplication and our hearts in hope, asking Allah to make the coming year a bearer of glad tidings for believing men and women—
a year in which souls advance toward a purer promise, justice rises, mercy expands, and light guides the wayfarers.
O Allah, make what is to come closer to Your pleasure, more abundant in Your gifts, and deeper in its imprint upon loving hearts.
The Sublime Qur'an unfolds on multiple levels of understanding. Words shift in meaning, and letters transform into symbols, each opening a distinct horizon of contemplation.
While reflecting upon Surah al-Ahzab, I paused at the divine description:
“…and as one who invites to Allah by His permission, and as a luminous lamp.”
This design deeply resonated within me.
Why was the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, described as sirāj munīr—an illuminating lamp?
Within this symbolic reading, sirāj gestures toward the solar dimension, while munīr evokes lunar clarity. At that moment, a unified vision emerged, as though the verse alluded to Muhammad, peace be upon him, as the embodiment of both prophetic function and the two foundational cosmic phenomena upon which universal order rests. In this sense, he becomes an allusion to the Muhammadan Light, the origin of guidance itself.
From that night onward, this verse became for me an illuminating lamp, drawing me into deeper contemplation of the grandeur of the birth of the Beloved Chosen One and his connection to the symbolism of the sun and the moon. This axis therefore seeks to approach that divine balance.
Allah distinguished Muhammad, peace be upon him, as the only prophet carried by night upon al-Burāq, a luminous being of subtle nature, swift as lightning, counted among the celestial mountains. The journey began at the Sacred Mosque and culminated at al-Aqsa Mosque.
The Symbolic Structure of the Name Muhammad
The name Muhammad, peace be upon him, consists of four letters:
M (م) – Ḥ (ح) – M (م) – D (د)
The first Mīm symbolically refers to the Sacred Mosque.
The letter Ḥā' (h) indicates, in this contemplative reading, a pivotal inflection in the journey of al-Burāq, acting as a cartographic marker and an allusion to the blessed land of Medina al-Munawwara.
The second Mīm (M) refers to al-Aqsa Mosque.
The letter Dāl (d) symbolizes another inflection, tracing a dual orientation toward the Levant (Bilād al-Shām) and toward Egypt—both lands endowed with blessing.
Thus, the name Muhammad appears as a sacred word containing a symbolic map extending from the Kaaba to Bayt al-Maqdis, sanctified lands beneath which lies the Foundation Stone. This path mirrors that traversed by Al-Burāq. Within this reading, the name Muhammad symbolically extends toward the sacred Mother Stone and into the depths of telluric cavities.
From this perspective, the divine command to invoke prayers upon Muhammad, peace be upon him, emerges not only from his prophetic rank, but also from the symbolic dimension of his name, which carries the map of a concealed sacred path. In the same way, the Arabic words of the Qur'an may be approached as symbolic cartographies.
Prophetic Names as Sacred Maps
Ibrāhīm
Ismāʿīl
In both names, the letter Mīm refers to the Sacred Mosque. Allah commanded Ibrāhīm and Ismāʿīl, peace be upon them, to raise its foundations.
The name Ibrāhīm indicates the path leading toward the Kaaba, while Ismāʿīl sketches the symbolic map of the land of Mecca itself.
The primordial Arabic script in which the Qur'an was revealed thus appears, within this contemplative framework, as a guide indicating places upon the earth.
“Glorified is He who took His servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to al-Aqsa Mosque, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs.”
(Surah al-Isrā', 1).
The environment surrounding a mosque unfolds in the form of a circle, and the Arabic Mīm (m) itself is hollow and circular in shape. Accordingly, each prophetic name sent to a specific community may reveal, through its letters, a cartography of that land and its principal sanctuaries. In this reading, the form of the sacred Mother Stone symbolically corresponds to the name Muhammad, peace be upon him.
The letter Mīm appears twice only in the name Muhammad, preserving its uniqueness and sacred singularity.
Further Symbolic Indications
Consider Yūsuf and Mūsā, peace be upon them. Though both lived in Egypt, their origins point to distinct lands.
The name Yūsuf contains the letter Fā' (F), symbolically referring to Firʿawn (Pharaoh).
The name Mūsā begins with Mīm (M), indicating a connection to al-Aqsa Mosque, as he was the first to call the Children of Israel toward the Holy Land.
The name Sulaymān also contains Mīm, affirming his bond with the region of al-Aqsa.
The letter Sīn (S), present in many prophetic names—Mūsā, ʿĪsā, Isḥāq, Yūsuf, Sulaymān, al-Yasaʿ, Ilyās, Yūnus, Idrīs, Ismāʿīl—symbolically refers to chains of sacred mountains within the lands they inhabited.
By tracing the movement of letters and the orientation of script, one may extract signs of routes, places, and trajectories. When these names are united, a cartography of blessed lands emerges, comparable in its coherence to modern geographical maps. This principle may also extend to ordinary names, eventually encompassing the continents as a whole.
The essential condition remains the use of the ancient Arabic script. Once the terrestrial map becomes visible, the celestial gates may likewise be contemplated, for this science—embedded within the Qur’an—binds writing to the cosmos, the letter to place, and language to creation.
“And He taught Adam all the names...”
(Surah al-Baqarah, 31)
The Science of the Names taught to Adam constitutes universal keys. On earth, letters bear meanings accessible to human perception; In the heavens, their connotations undergo profound transformation.
The letter Sīn, for example, signifies mountains on earth and clouds in celestial realms.
Cosmic Orientation of the Name Muhammad
The writing of the name Muhammad symbolically indicates the orientation of the poles:
The first Mīm corresponds to the sun, the second to the moon.
Thus, the sun and the moon function as a cosmic compass.
Shams (sun) begins with Shīn (sh), evoking the north (Shamāl).
Qamar (moon) ends with Rā' (R), evoking the south or the right (Yamīn).
Accordingly, Muhammad may be read from north to south, from sun to moon, from the Sacred Mosque to al-Aqsa Mosque.
Allah made the Qur’an a bearer of symbolic codes. In another chapter not included here, I addressed the symbolism of life and death through a spiritual reading of Surah ar-Raḥmān, where such correspondences belong to a symbolic rather than scientific language.
The letters Sīn in Shams and Qāf in Qamar allude respectively to the Hour (as-Sāʿah) and the Resurrection (al-Qiyāmah), together forming a symbolic reference to the Hour of Resurrection.
Within this contemplative reading, al-Burāq, charged with subtle energy, followed the magnetized path of the Mother Stone, assuming the symbolic form of the name Muhammad.
Its swift passage between Mecca and al-Aqsa unfolds within a deeper understanding of time and space.
“Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet...”
(Surah al-Ahzab, 56)
The letters of this verse function, within this reading, as symbolic keys. When recognized, they activate as signs, opening toward deeper horizons of understanding.
